Exhibit text:
In naming this show "Del Otro Lado" [From the Other Side], I have imagined an exhibit that approaches borders and boundaries from a more mystical framework, rather than political. I would like to elicit you, the viewer, to contemplate a border which separates, but more importantly, stirs our desire to explore further that which lies beyond who we are and likely, where we stand. Hopefully, what we will then encounter is a subjective discovery that enriches our rigid understanding of the known by allowing the existence of a border-less and fluid dialogue. Enjoy the trip!
Some of works, anthropomorphological in makeup, capitulate scenes where a temporal border arranges the canvas in which surfaces which were once homogenous and familiar, as evidence of a battered and scarred surface-- as if to observe and submit, something happened here!
Yielding to the desire to know can result in the possibility of learning what it is we identify as the "other" side. If you take this route it's possible that your thirst will remain as an unsurmountable peak. I invite you to indulge in the simple pleasure of seeing!
Much like the traveler who ventures out of his comfort zone and experiences some strange newfound favorite taste, sound, or feeling, the art presented here is a reflection of that type of not knowing. The exhibit offers a sampling of a regional Texas artists from El Paso, Corpus Chisti, Zapata, McAllen, Austin, and Lubbock.
